Family law is just that – the law applying to a significant change in life as you know it – whether parenting, finances or both are impacted it is not unusual for one party to be ahead of the game in terms of the decision to end a relationship.
Safe and secure
Apart from the obvious concerns around your personal safety, consider the security around other matters including security of data such as identity and social media. Do you have access to your birth and marriage certificates. Are your social media and email accounts secure and where necessary, consider updating passwords or perhaps create new accounts.
It is also important to secure your finances. Speak with your bank about protecting assets including personal savings. Where commercial interests are involved, what if any arrangements are necessary to secure family income or the ongoing operation of those interests.
Critically, and prior to focussing on what the end result may look like for you and your family – get back to basics. Is there an agreement, or do you have access to resources to secure housing and income to support yourself and your children until such time as a final agreement, or a Court Order is made.
Not all separations are awful, not all separations are amicable. Consulting with professionals including experienced family lawyers, mediators and counsellors is critical you have access to information to manage your expectations, and to protect your legal rights.
